Camera In Use - How to Fix

Updated: April 2026

Understanding the Problem

Seeing "Camera is being used by another application" means a different program has already claimed exclusive control over your webcam. Unlike microphones, most cameras can only stream to a single app at any given moment.

Typical offenders include:

  • Video conferencing apps - Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Meet
  • Streaming software - OBS Studio, Streamlabs
  • Camera apps - Windows Camera, Photo Booth (Mac)
  • Background apps - Some apps run in system tray

Quick Fix

  1. Close all video apps - Zoom, Teams, Skype, Discord, OBS
  2. Check the system tray - Right-click and quit any camera-related apps
  3. Restart your browser
  4. If nothing works, restart your computer

Find Which App is Using the Camera

Windows 10/11

  1. Look at the taskbar - when the camera is in use, you'll see a camera icon
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
  3. Scroll down to see "Recent activity" showing which apps accessed the camera

Windows Task Manager Method

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Look for these apps and end them:
    • Zoom Meetings
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Skype
    • Discord
    • OBS Studio
    • Webex
  3. Right-click → End Task

Mac

  1. Look at the menu bar - a green dot appears when camera is in use (macOS Monterey+)
  2. Open Activity Monitor (search in Spotlight)
  3. Search for video apps and click X to quit them
  4. Or use Terminal: lsof | grep "Camera"

Common Apps to Check

AppHow to Close
ZoomClick profile icon → Sign Out, or quit from system tray
Microsoft TeamsRight-click system tray icon → Quit
SkypeFile → Sign Out, or quit from system tray
DiscordQuit from system tray (it runs in background)
OBS StudioClose the application completely
SlackEnd any active huddle, then quit

Browser Tab Issues

Sometimes another browser tab is using the camera:

  • Close other tabs that might have camera access (other video call sites)
  • Check other browser windows
  • Close all browser windows and reopen

Prevent Future Issues

  • Disable "Start on login" for video apps you don't always need
  • Close video apps completely after meetings (they often stay in background)
  • Use one video app at a time

Test Your Camera

After closing other apps, test your camera on DoCam.io Webcam Test to verify it's now available.
