Location Unavailable - How to Fix
Updated: April 2026
What's Preventing Location Detection
When you see "Location information unavailable" or "Location request timed out," it means your device tried to pinpoint your position but failed. Typical reasons include:
- No GPS signal - You're indoors or GPS is blocked
- Location services disabled on your device
- Weak or no internet connection for Wi-Fi positioning
- Device doesn't have GPS - Many desktops lack GPS hardware
- Airplane mode is enabled
Quick Fix
- Enable Location Services on your device
- Move near a window for better GPS signal
- Check internet connection - Wi-Fi helps determine location
- Disable Airplane mode
- Restart your device
Desktop Computers
Most desktop computers don't have GPS hardware. They use Wi-Fi and IP address to estimate location:
- IP-based location is approximate (city level)
- Wi-Fi positioning requires Wi-Fi adapter
- For precise location, use a mobile device or external GPS receiver
Mobile Device Solutions
Android
- Go to Settings → Location
- Turn on Location
- Tap "Location mode" or "Google Location Accuracy"
- Enable "High accuracy" or "Improve Location Accuracy"
iPhone/iPad
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Turn on Location Services
- Scroll down and enable for Safari or your browser
Improve GPS Signal
- Go outside or near a window - GPS needs sky visibility
- Wait a moment - GPS lock can take 30-60 seconds
- Turn off battery saver - It may limit GPS
- Check if case blocks signal - Some metal cases interfere
- Update Google Play Services (Android) for better location
Timeout Issues
If you get "Location request timed out":
- Your device is taking too long to get a GPS fix
- Try the location request again after a few seconds
- Move to a location with better signal
- Make sure location permissions are fully granted (not "Ask")
Alternative: IP-Based Location
If GPS doesn't work, websites can still estimate your location using your IP address. This gives:
- City or region level accuracy
- May be inaccurate if using VPN or proxy
- Works without GPS hardware
Verify the Fix
After applying any of the solutions above, open the DoCam.io Geolocation Test to confirm that both GPS and IP-based location are reporting correctly.
