Microphone In Use - How to Fix

Updated: April 2026

Understanding Exclusive Microphone Access

When you see "Microphone is being used by another application," it means a running program has locked your mic in exclusive mode. While some apps can share mic input, others grab sole control and block everything else.

Frequent offenders include:

  • Video conferencing apps - Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Meet
  • Voice recording software - Audacity, voice memo apps
  • Streaming software - OBS Studio, Streamlabs
  • Voice assistants - Cortana, Siri
  • Gaming software - Discord, game voice chat

Quick Fix

  1. Close all voice/video apps - Zoom, Teams, Skype, Discord
  2. Check the system tray - Right-click and quit any audio-related apps
  3. Restart your browser
  4. If nothing works, restart your computer

Find Which App is Using the Microphone

Windows 10/11

  1. Look at the taskbar - when the microphone is in use, you may see a mic icon
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
  3. Scroll down to see "Recent activity" showing which apps accessed the microphone

Windows Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  2. Look for these apps and end them:
    • Zoom Meetings
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Skype
    • Discord
    • OBS Studio
    • Audacity
  3. Right-click → End Task

Mac

  1. Look at the menu bar - an orange dot appears when microphone is in use (macOS Monterey+)
  2. Open Activity Monitor
  3. Search for audio apps and quit them

Some apps take exclusive control of the microphone. To allow sharing:

  1. Right-click speaker icon → Sounds
  2. Go to "Recording" tab
  3. Double-click your microphone
  4. Go to "Advanced" tab
  5. Uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control"
  6. Click OK

Verify Your Mic Is Free

After closing the conflicting apps, confirm your microphone is accessible again with the DoCam.io Microphone Test.
