No Sound from Speakers - How to Fix
Why There's No Sound
No audio output can be caused by many factors:
- Volume is muted or set to zero
- Wrong output device selected
- Speakers/headphones not connected properly
- Audio drivers missing or corrupted
- Browser tab muted
- Hardware issue with speakers
Quick Fix
- Check volume - Make sure it's not muted (click speaker icon)
- Check physical connections - Cables, Bluetooth pairing
- Check browser tab - Look for muted speaker icon on tab
- Try another app - Play a YouTube video to test
- Restart browser or computer
Windows Solutions
Check Volume Mixer
- Right-click the speaker icon in taskbar
- Click "Open Volume Mixer"
- Make sure your browser volume isn't at zero or muted
- Check that the master volume is up
Select Correct Output Device
- Right-click speaker icon → "Sound settings"
- Under "Output", select your speakers or headphones
- Click the device and check volume level
Run Audio Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings → System → Sound
- Scroll to "Troubleshoot common sound problems"
- Click "Output devices" and follow steps
Update Audio Drivers
- Press Win + X → Device Manager
- Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
- Right-click your audio device → "Update driver"
Restart Windows Audio Service
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc - Find "Windows Audio"
- Right-click → "Restart"
Mac Solutions
Check Sound Output
- Click the speaker icon in menu bar (or use Control Center)
- Make sure volume is up and correct output is selected
- Or go to System Settings → Sound → Output
Reset Core Audio
- Open Terminal
- Type:
sudo killall coreaudiod - Press Enter and type password
Browser-Specific Issues
Check if Tab is Muted
- Look for a speaker icon on the browser tab
- If crossed out, right-click tab → "Unmute"
Check Site Permissions
- Some browsers block autoplay audio
- Click anywhere on the page to enable audio
- Check site settings for sound permissions
Clear Browser Cache
- Sometimes cached data causes audio issues
- Try hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
External Speakers/Headphones
- Check power - External speakers may need to be turned on
- Check cables - Make sure they're fully plugged in
